Fort McKinley is a former United States Army coastal defense fort on Great Diamond Island, Maine in Casco Bay, which operated from 1873 to 1947. It was named for President William McKinley. It included a sub-post, Fort Lyon, on Cow Island, just north of Great Diamond Island.

Fort McKinley was constructed by the U.S. Army's Coast Artillery Corps on the northern half of Great Diamond Island as part of the national coastal defense system. Construction began in 1890 with installation of facilities to mine the Hussey Sound entrance to Portland Harbor.

Located on Great Diamond Island in Portland, ME, Fort McKinley was built in 1901. This turn-of-the-century fort was the coastal headquarters for the defense of Portland Harbor until the end of World War II.

After decades of neglect and decay, the fort has been restored to its original elegance. Now known as the community of Diamond Cove, the barracks and officers’ quarters have become gracious homes with slate roofs, wooden porches, grand staircases and fireplaces.

Open from July-September, the museum offers exhibits on the history of Fort McKinley and also hosts several events throughout the summer. The museum offers historical presentations, tours, hosts visiting authors, and offers movie screenings.

The Fort McKinley Museum is located in the Diamond Cove community, within easy walking distance from the Diamond Cove stop on the Casco Bay Ferry Lines. The museum is located on the left as you walk up Diamond Avenue from the ferry stop. Normal hours in July and August will be Fridays from 2:30 to 5:30, Saturdays and Sundays 10:30 to 4:30.
