A historic New Jersey synagogue was engulfed by a four-alarm fire early Friday morning as a rabbi and his family of six "luckily" escaped the inferno.

Congregation Beth El in Rutherford, more than a century old, was destroyed. The mayor said there was no indication of arson so far.

The Rutherford, NJ, synagogue fire started around 2:50 a.m. and quickly engulfed the building. Rabbi Yitzhock Lerman, his wife and four children were sleeping in an apartment inside when the blaze
