Melting snow: What to expect this weekend: Snow that melts during the day and creates pools of water on roads and sidewalks. When temperatures drop overnight, these puddles of water freeze into black ice. This scenario is especially common after snowstorms where the sun partially melts snow during the day, but the temperature drops again at night.

Parts of North Texas have already seen a significant amount of snow, with more expected in the coming hours. Snow has been falling in Denton and Collin County for a decent amount of the day, while Tarrant County and Dallas County have seen less snow. Areas like Prosper and Bonham saw six inches of snow or more reported by 9 p.m.

As snow, freezing rain and sleet make their way through North Texas this Thursday and early Friday during the winter storm, most schools and offices are closing their doors, but many other services will remain open.

The National Weather Service’s Dallas-Fort Worth branch is warning of hazardous travel conditions on roads. The conditions are expected to last Thursday into Friday and could result slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses, according to NWS.

Slick roads are blamed for several accidents in North Texas Thursday, including an 18-wheeler that jackknifed on State Highway 183 in Irving. It was dangling off the overpass as crews worked to remove the truck and reopen the road.

Moisture and a mix of precipitation should start to move into the metroplex from the southwest starting in the morning to the mid-morning hours.
