Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare condition in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis.

The number of suspected cases of Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra has surged to 170, with 132 confirmed cases, the state's Health Department said. According to the health department, five suspected deaths of GBS have been found until now.

GBS begins with tingling or numbness in the feet and hands, followed by muscle weakness and difficulty moving joints. Symptoms worsen over two to four weeks, typically starting in the arms and legs. The reported mortality rate varies between three and 13%, depending on severity and quality of health care support.
