Gandalf arrives in Dol Goldur and confirms Sauron's presence in the year T.A. 2850 – almost 100 years after the death of Helm Hammerhand.

When the White Council (whose members included Saruman, Gandalf, Elrond, and Círdan) attacked Sauron’s Dol Guldur stronghold, Galadriel was there alongside them.

In the movie (portrayed by Sylvester McCoy), he gets more exposure as a wise and courageous, albeit eccentric and comical, wizard whose curiosities led to Gandalf uncovering the mystery of Dol Guldur.
