Isolated severe thunderstorm threats will fade late evening, but flash flood warnings may remain until midnight for parts of the Piedmont Triad.

New York and New Jersey hit by torrential rain and flash floods, forcing highway closures, suspending subway lines and flight delays.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely this evening. Any shower or storm will produce torrential rain with flash flooding a significant concern, especially west of Lexington. One or two storms could also be strong to severe, with damaging winds the main threat.

Heavy rains and flash flooding in the northeast have caused two deaths in New Jersey. More rain is expected through mid-week for portions of the eastern and central U.S.

The Center Valley area in Upper Saucon Township, where flooding was reported along Route 309, had a recorded 6 inches of rainfall, making it the highest rainfall total in the Lehigh Valley, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey. Other areas had about 1 or 2 inches of rain.

The heavy downpours wreaked havoc across the city with footage showing commuters overwhelmed by floodwaters in various subway stations.

In just 12 hours, over 10 inches of rain slammed Kansas, flooding streets and neighbourhoods overnight. The deluge overwhelmed clogged storm drains, turning low-lying areas into temporary rivers.
