President Donald Trump was sued by a group of mostly Democratic-led states over his alleged plan to effectively dismantle the US Education Department by slashing its workforce in half.

Democratic state attorneys general sued to block the Trump administration from dismantling the department, or laying off roughly half of its staff.

The suit from 20 states and the District of Columbia comes two days after the federal agency fired more than 1,300 employees.
