Favorable views of China and confidence in President Xi Jinping have increased in many regions while approval of the U.S. and President Donald Trump has declined or remained low, a new global Pew Research Center survey has found.

Beijing also seems willing to engage in diplomatic channels. China's US embassy confirmed last week that it is inviting foreign dignitaries — some of them American — to a September 3 ceremony in Beijing commemorating the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II.

President Trump might visit China before going to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit between Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, or he could meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC event in South Korea,
