After the Supreme Court allowed President Trump on Tuesday to resume firing government workers, federal employees rushed to Signal group chats and anxious phone calls, trying to figure out what it meant for them.

The administration argues that the president does not need additional authorization from Congress to conduct agency-wide layoffs. Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the Supreme Court’s order, saying it “stopped lawless lower courts from restricting President Trump’s authority over federal personnel.”

The Supreme Court opened the way for the Trump administration to continue mass layoffs in the federal workforce in an emergency ruling Tuesday. The court’s decision lifts a lower court ruling that blocked the layoffs at government agencies that President Donald Trump initiated in a February executive order.
