The Beluga -- billed by Airbus as the world's biggest cargo plane in terms of volume transported -- looks something like a whale, with a rounded fuselage mounted on an Airbus A300-600 base.

Airbus and its many subsidiaries have come up with some wonderfully ambitious and interesting aircraft over the years. The double-decker A380 superjumbo is one example that comes to mind.

Airbus last week told unions it was scrapping efforts to create a freight airline out of spare capacity for the whale-like Beluga planes that it uses to ferry fuselage parts between its factories.
