The U.S.’s closest security allies in Asia, along with six Southeast Asian countries, have been given another three weeks to negotiate trade deals — or face higher tariffs.

In a bold move, the United States will impose a 25% tariff on imports from Japan and South Korea starting August 1. President Donald Trump announced this decision, citing unfair trade balances and non-reciprocal relationships.

Trump said the United States would impose tariffs of 25% on goods from Tunisia, Malaysia and Kazakhstan, with levies of 30% on South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, climbing to 32% on Indonesia, 35% on Serbia and Bangladesh, 36% on Cambodia and Thailand; and 40% on Laos and Myanmar. A deal with India was close, Trump added.
