I've visited this museum several times (but never on the free day) and have never found it crowded. Not sure if there's a cafe, you might found out on the website.

I agree, A solid hour. Dont missed Jim Blanchards Measured water colors if they're still on exhibit . Also close to the WW2 Museum which can be a longer visit but not to be missed

You can use the cable cars, there is a stop at St. Charles and Joseph; or at Lee Circle for inbound. There is a lot across the street, one at the WW2 Museum and others in the area. I recommend putting together a couple of activities in the area and lunch or dinner - many options. Galleries on Julia. Confederacy Museum is nice. WW2 is a half day. Area is pretty cool.
